ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist and designer Alicia Mason has lived in Laguna Beach, California; Sandpoint, Idaho; and Maui, Hawaii. Inspired by the pristine beauty offered by these art communities, she has studied and worked with many different creative mediums, including watercolor, hand painted textiles and stained glass. From her home in Laguna Beach, Alicia is exploring the many possibilities of hand painted ceramic tile. Pieces may be functional, dramatic, or whimsical, applying aesthetic sensibilities to the visions and parameters of the clients, the results are pieces that consistently delight and satisfy.

CREATION PROCESS

"I begin with an unglazed terra cotta tile. The tile is used in its standard size, or it is cut to meet the specifications for the area or picture chosen. The decorative project starts with a design which is created with hand drawings, and then transferred to the tile. The technique of waxing is applied to the transferred design. This creates a barrier line to prevent the different glaze colors from blending into each other. After the glazes dry, the tiles are then placed in the kiln and fired. After cooling, the piece is ready to be framed and installed."

"Tile is an application that, unlike any other finish, will last virtually beyond a lifetime. Tile is one of the most durable surfaces, and it is practically maintenance free forever."
